Zig Zag's Housing Service

Zig Zag's Housing Service is based on the philosophy of encouraging young women to become independent. We believe that appropriate housing is a basic right of all young women and aim to provide safe, affordable, secure accommodation.

Young Women And Homelessness
Young women experiencing homelessness are confronted by a range of oppressive circumstances. The situation of homelessness is compounded for young women in several ways. Firstly, they are women, secondly they are young and thirdly they have little or no income.

Young women are a particularly vulnerable group amongst the growing numbers of homeless people in Australia. Young women are more vulnerable to violence and abuse within the home and are forced to leave their families and/or home.

Supported Accommodation
Zig Zag provides medium term supported accommodation to young women, either single or with a child who:

are 16 to 25 years
who have an income
who wish to live independently and by themselves
; who wish to live at Camp Hill
who require some support
who require medium term accommodation, either as a step to explore a longer-term housing option and/or to provide a stable base in order to complete a certain task (eg complete study). Medium term means that we provide accommodation for up 6 months.
What is support?
Support is about assisting you to achieve goals identified by you; the following is a list of common areas that young women identify as support needs: budgeting, accessing local transport, information about sexual violence, info about legal rights, info about your rights as a tenant, exploring options for long term housing, parenting issues, looking for a job, furthering education, arranging childcare, relationship issues, drug & alcohol issues etc!!

General Counselling
Zig Zag Service provides a general counselling service to young women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, who are not housed within Zig Zag's accommodation.

What is counselling?:

a space where young women can talk about a range of issues..in fact, anything that the young woman finds problematic in her life.
an opportunity to explore issues underlying a young woman's experience of homelessness.
a time for you to tell your story & explore thoughts & feelings when you are ready.
an opportunity to gather information about issues that are important to you.
a safe place where you can be yourself and not be judged or blamed.

How Do I Access Zig Zag's Accommodation Or General Counselling?
Contact one of the Housing Workers between the hours of 9am - 5pm (Monday to Friday). If a Housing Worker is not there, leave a message and we will contact you as soon as possible.
For general counselling, a worker will give you the option to come in to the Centre for an initial contact session. This is an opportunity for you to sus us out and for us to let you know more about what we can provide.
For supported accommodation, a worker will let you know if there are any vacancies. If there is a vacancy, an interview will be arranged to share information and determine if the Zig Zag accommodation will meet your needs. If there are no vacancies, a worker will provide you with information on other accommodation services that may be able to assist.
