What does the Zig Zag's
Sexual Assault Service offer?

Zig Zag's Sexual Assault Service provides information, celebration, advocacy, referral, support and counselling services in the area of sexual abuse for young women between the age of 12 to 25 years. The service recognises that young women face unique issues, different from their older counterparts. Young women are less likely to be believed or supported. They often do not have the resources to access support and services. Young women are often more vulnerable to abuse from both men and institutions. Yet these are the women who will shape the future for the following generations.

FOR YOUNG WOMEN
Dealing With The Impact Of Sexual Assault

If you have survived sexual abuse as a child or recent sexual assault, you are a strong, resourceful person who has the right to be treated with respect. You may want to know what your options are in terms of support, medical, legal and safety concerns. This information may be obtained by contacting Zig Zag during office hours. Counselling is provided by appointment over the phone or at the centre.

What is Counselling?

A time for you to tell your story and explore thoughts and feelings when you are ready
A safe place where you can be yourself and not be judged or blamed
An opportunity to gather information about issues that are important to you
Support with decision making and choices
A time to explore solutions you haven't tried
Support to find your own answers and to change and grow in your own time

Zig Zag provides initial contact sessions to explore support needs and ongoing counselling options. Medium to long term counselling is offered with regular opportunities to review the counselling sessions, to determine whether they continue to meet your needs.

Support Groups
In addition to individual counselling Zig Zag also offers support groups. The type of group offered may include: information groups or therapeutic support groups.

Resources
Zig Zag has a variety of information and resources on a range of topics, including healing from sexual abuse, legal and medical information. Young women are welcome to use and borrow these resources.

FOR WORKERS
Worker Training And Community Education

We offer training for workers throughout the State of Queensland on issues relating to sexual assault against young women. This provides workers with the opportunity to develop, share and extend their skills and knowledge in the area of sexual violence against young women.

We also offer education on issues relating to sexual violence to those in the community. With this, we aim to increase community awareness about the prevalence of sexual abuse, and contribute to the elimination of sexual violence against young women.

Sexual Assault Counsellors

Sexual assault counsellors are available to provide peer support to workers who are seeking support or assistance in their work with young women on issues relating to sexual violence.

Resources
Zig Zag is in the process of developing a range of information and training resources for the use of those working in the youth, women's and community sectors with young women on issues relating to sexual violence.
